week 9: show off - my favorite blog

Seb's Blog

The reason why I chose his blog is because, for me, I find his blog really interesting.
When reading his posts I feel like he is actually talking to me. His words in every post he uploads seem like they came from his heart, I can tell it is his way of writing.

When Seb uploads posts on his blog it feels like you cannot stop reading, he is also a kind of person who shares the information he finds which is really interesting, like his post " Fun Facts About France (cuz I am part French).” I never knew in France you could marry people even if they are dead (creepy). I also figured out we have a lot in common, like how we love Japan, and also that we are a HUGE fan of anime. It's nice to have someone on the net who has some similarities with you.

I am choosing his blog as my favorite the same way I choose who I want to be friends with. Of course, I would want to make friends with many people, no, a lot of people, but, if I really just had to choose one it would be him. Why? I think Seb is an interesting person and will learn a lot from, I think he is someone who is friendly and has always a lot to say, I'm sure he does have a lot of friends. I would really love to meet him one day, and I hope his blog gets elected as one of the best.

week 9: Show off - My passion

12/7/2016

I like creating stories. To me, creating stories entertains me and makes me feel at ease. It is what I mostly do when I am alone.

Creating stories with my imagination somehow allows me to experience all the different emotions which I haven't actually experienced, which is fun. It also helps me bring joy to those listening or reading my stories. Of course I wouldn't like writing stories without something or someone who inspires me right? Ever since I was young I would always dream of myself becoming what I want when I grow up. I kept changing my dream, and I find that really different from the people around me.

How is it easy for them to choose what they dream of becoming so easily, and stick to it until they achieve their dream? Why is it hard for me to decide?

I've been looking for an answer for my question when one day I just did. It was when I was searching for a book to read at a store with my mom. It was really hard, it took me really long time just to choose a book to read. When my time was up I decided just to go for the book which looked interesting.

When reading the book I somehow felt like I'm in a world, unlike any other, where the book guides me to what happens next. I then realized I wanted to create stories which will give my readers this kind of feeling that I always have when reading the stories I like. I want my readers to enjoy what they are reading and not just read to kill their time. I want my stories to be very special to whoever reads or listens to them.

And that is my dream.
I WANT TO BECOME AN AUTHOR!

(Story)
A Dream To Remember

Dreaming! Such an experience in life! We all know that they are just basically stories and images our mind creates while we sleep. It is an interesting sight don't you think?

Before I start dreaming I would always wish what to dream about. I would always hope that my dreams would turn out the way I want them to but, whenever I tried, they never seemed to work. Sometimes they ended up scaring me in my sleep. I couldn't help but be awake the whole night. They are what we call nightmares, right? They frighten you until you are awake, they haunt you while you are asleep. Sometimes I get too afraid and I can't go back to sleep, afraid they will come back to haunt me again.

There was once a dream I had, where a guy named Ryan showed me around the world, the world of dreams. It was all magnificent. In that world we could be what we want, we could even turn into the kind of people who can actually save lives magically. He introduced me to some people living in the area and showed me incredible sights, like the Cloud Café, the Amazing Art Structure, sparkling greenhouse, and many more. It was, I dream, I wouldn't dare to forget. There was also a dream where I learned something about dreaming. Ryan told me "Never forget your dream, it could one day lead you to someplace extraordinary". What did that even mean?

Who knows, maybe it was just a message he wanted to pass on, and also a message to remember this very special dream.

week 8: Community - glee club

Glee Club

Ever since I was a 1st grader I would always join this club at school. Glee Club or singers’ club was one of the clubs where I was always active and would always participate in every show. If there is a club where I can sing with all my heart, count me in!

Glee club was first introduced in our school in the year 2008, but I became part of it in 2010. Glee club now has its practices every Thursday every semester. Other performances are usually held at school but the biggest performances are held at every AIT graduation ceremony; Asian Institute of Technology, a bigger community that we are part of.

Before becoming a glee club member, you have to first pass an audition. In the audition you have to pick and sing any song of your choice. The music teacher then decides whether you are an auto or soprano. Recently there are around 40 members in this club and 6 members are from my class.

Glee club to me and some of my friends is one of the oldest clubs we've ever joined and we will miss it when we graduate from AITIS next year!

Week 7: Let's talk school - Technology in Our School

11/27/2016

AN INTERVIEW WITH THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, MR. KEVIN MAURITSON
"Technology plays a major role in almost every part of our lives, our communities, and our homes. Yet most schools lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into classroom learning.
We interviewed our school principal Mr. Kevin Mauritson to know some of the initiatives taken by him to introduce technology in classroom learning. And how it is improving quality of education at ATIS. Sit back, relax and read what he said.

Q: What is your idea of using technology in the school?
I think it is extraordinarily important for our students to be up-to-date with current technology trends, to be using the technology as much as possible to help in their learning. We can use technology not just in computer lab or computer science subject but across the entire curriculum. This can be accomplished with the use of the simple computers in the computer lab or with the iPads that we have introduced in to the higher levels of the students and every teacher now has an iPad in their classroom, so every child can benefit from that. I have two smartboards installed at the school, to help the students learn so that they can experience not just on a little screen but learn in an interactive way on a bigger screen and hence leverage benefits of technology for more valuable learning.
We don’t have a lot of resources at AITIS such as there is no big research library for children around here. So, by providing iPads in the classroom, I have opened a door to the world for all students. I have given you an opportunity if you use it properly to go out and not only learn about somebody who maybe is a famous scientist, but to find out exactly what is going on today in the current research. You can go to the website and find out what’s happening when we start talking about any aspect of science, any aspect of social studies, world news etc. During the Thailand floods in 2011, AITIS library was severely affected, and now we’re trying to replace all those damaged books. If you use the iPads and the computers and the other technologies, you can have access to all the books in the world. We just have to find out the website and go to it, and Boom! And for those of us who are learning English, a lot of ESL students, you can give audio books that will help the children learn how to pronounce the words properly, how to read, there are so many benefits of this whole project because it encourages the use of technology in classroom learning and you know it’s incredible!"

Q: What have you contributed so far to bring technology in our school?
"I am the one who authored the technology improvement plan, I am the one who set the goals, I am the one who set the tasks with the teachers to get on board with this program. Some teachers were skeptical, “All the kids don’t need this, we don’t want this in the classroom.” So, what were the first steps I did?  I created awareness in the children about benefits of using technology in classroom, and how it would help them. Another thing we did, was arranging workshop for teachers on the use of smart boards in the classroom, and the teachers said “Yeah, okay.” And when we actually installed starboards, all teachers then unanimously agreed, “Oh, we want one!” I educated in many ways, the teachers and the staff on how smartboard technology can be intergraded with other technologies in classroom interactive learning environment. A lot of teachers think this is more work, and all of a sudden, they have to do this and have to now go to do research, but how else are we going to get the knowledge when we don’t do the research? And research is all part of education, and once we start showing them, their job becomes easier, their lesson plans become much more topic focused and they become more current.
History comes to life because we can go and look on the internet and see the different resources for history. Geography comes to life because we can go to the past and present to learn what’s happening now. We can even predict the future by using technology. Just recently when that earthquake struck Japan, we immediately visited the website and watched the tidal waves as the tsunami warning was issued as the result of the earthquake. Technology provides us the opportunity to watch live the rising waves of the sea due to Tsunami which was a phenomenon that most people don’t ever get to see. Thus technology helps us not only to predict Tsunami warning abut also helps us to plan in time to save human lives before the huge waves due to earthquake can cause damage to human life and property. These are the benefits of technology if it is put to positive use. So if there are good things of technology then I’m very happy. If there are bad things I take responsibility and try to fix it. This is my goal for the school."

Q: What do you think of the future use of technology in school?
"I think it is absolutely important to further enhance the use of technology, and it would be unfair if we do not provide latest technology tools in the form of hardware and software to our students. With the technology here, you should be able to have a vision for the future, whether you’re a male or a female, where you want to go or where you want to learn, and then we plan to provide the best available resources to you. Because we provide you the latest technology tools, you can envisage what would be the future and how you can better plan your future educational goals. I can’t predict the future and I have no idea what you need to know when you are 20 years down the road from now. Where would the world be then. So, I have to prepare you today as best as I can with all the tools I can provide, and technology is one major tool to allow all of our students the opportunity to learn and grow and realize their full potential and make their future dreams come true."

Q: What other electronics hardware would you like to add to the school?
"I think you need more coding, I think you need more access to robotics. I think that is a trend that will help you in math, that will help you in group work, it will help you in computing actually. You’ll learn how the computers will work and maybe someday you will be able to create some fantastic programs that will help other people. That would make me absolutely happy. What else would I like to add here? Probably even more laptops, more iPads in the classroom. We need more programs that will allow you to explore, allow you to build up your knowledge, and learn in a manner that helps you learn. Not all the children would want to do coding, not all the children are gonna want to do robotics, but there are different aspects of the whole scheme, that if you are more artistic and less interested in computing, you can create things that will help your fellow students and show them that it  all ties together, so that there is a lot of things we are planning to introduce to address the varying interests of all students and perhaps I think the biggest one is adding more iPads and smartboards into the classrooms."

Q: Is there anything else besides technology you would like to add to this school?
"We need more up-to-date textbooks, we need more reference material so that we can reference it. If the internet goes down and we loose the wifi connection etc. then the iPads become not so useful anymore. So, if you are working on a research paper and we loose wifi for a day, and then we have encyclopedia and text for you in the library or in the classroom and you can continue your learning process. There are a lot of things I would like to add, my list is endless as I look around. I have dreams I have visions that I want to realize. And the pavilion for sports and physical education, is another thing I have been pushing for years and it’s finally almost ready. So, this is like a goal finally being realized for me. There are a lot of other things I want to do, like better canteen services, a better environment for Physical Education (PE) etc. My list is really endless…."

week 5:FREE CHOICE-MY FAVORITE AUTHOR

Have you ever read The land Of Stories: The Wishing Spell? or perhaps the Enchantress Returns? ...  Well if you haven't try reading it! the story is amazing and is easy to picture in your head, and the author of those stories is Chris Colfer.

To me, Chris Colfer is an amazing author, and so far my favorite. The way he thinks about the fairy tale world makes me want to go there just like Alex and Conner(characters in the book) did. His way of expressing the fairy tale world is just so amazing, I could imagine myself in there. What I really look for when choosing my favorite author is the kind of story he/she writes. For me, I, am into fairy tales like Cinderella,Snow White,Little Red Riding hood, etc.even though they seem childish.

So this is why Chris Colfer is my favorite author, his stories about the amazing adventures of two twins who fight for the good in the Fairy tale world or the after life's of the fairy tale characters that we all know is what brings me to like his stories.

To Chris Colfer
Thank you for making such wonderful stories!

week 5: Free choice "Being proud of your nationality... is just something so amazing!"

Reader - "Why are you proud to be a Filipino?"

Me - Why not?

There is nothing to be ashamed of when being a Filipino, and there is just nothing to hide.We Filipinos can experience the different environments and just happen to be adapted into them so easily. We live in an amazing country with popular tourism spots, beautiful culture, and spectacular views! It is also a country rich in natural resources like beaches, oceans, volcanoes, mountains and many more that help the nation make it an important economy in the region.
We can endure whatever hardships that come our way,but at the same time we cannot do it alone.

What I am proud of most is that,we are always optimistic, in other words positive.Even if how sad we Filipino's are, like after a natural disaster,we will always be strong and still show a smile on our faces at the end. Why? It is just who we are... A FILIPINO

My experience at dahilayan adventure park

11/2/2016

Picture
3 years ago I visited Dahilayan Adventure Park in the Philippines, and one of the amazing memories I've experienced there was when I tried out a zipline! The zipline I rode on was 840m long, also known as Asia's longest dual zipline. Have you heard of it? No? Well, if you wanna experience flying like a super hero, this is just the place.

I also rode on the shorter zipline that was 150m long and another that was 350m long while holding hands with my cousin. It felt like my legs were just useless. Sitting down until I reached the other side was just somehow pretty amazing! After experiencing the other ziplines I decided I was going to ride the longest zipline they had. I wasn't scared when I was with my family, but when I had to take a ride to get to the starting point the weather kinda creeped me out. It was so foggy and cold when we arrived at our destination, luckily I had a jacket.I began feeling scared of the ride and thought, "This is different" why? On most of the ziplines you just hold the rope and sit down, but in this zipline your position will totally look like a superman flying. I was then ready to cross, my heart was beating fast. Can you imagine? You? 4,700 feet about sea level? I couldn't really, not until I actually experienced it.
When I started moving, my eyes were just open and my hands were covering my mouth. I could not believe that this was actually so much...fun. Some said that the view was spectacular! But for me, there wasn't much of a view. Between the mountains, which was the starting point, fog covered much of the scenery, all I could see were some tress, not really much but I just smiled while passing by.
When I started feeling a little sunlight on my arms I knew that I was going to be out from between the mountains. When I was out from between the mountains the view was just breathtaking, I smiled happily while seeing it.
When I was being released by the straps that held tight on me I saw my family waving from the sides. In the end my parents bought me a congratulation certificate with a picture of me from inside a building. That experience made me believe that I am just a simple daredevil in a way.
